WinPcap has found its application in many open source and commercial network tools, including network monitors, network intrusion detection systems, protocol analyzers, traffic generators, sniffers, and network testers.
It also includes additional features such as support for remote packet capture, kernel-level packet filtering, and a network statistics engine.
WinPCap provides programs the ability to capture and transmit network packets by bypassing the protocol stack. This is not a critical Windows component and can be removed if known to cause problems. Rpcapd.exe is part of the WinPcap packet library. WinPCap is a packet sniffing tool that provides access to link-layer networks for Windows machines. The genuine rpcapd.exe file is a software component of Remote Packet Capture Daemon by Riverbed.
